Large loop excision of the transformation zone (LLETZ)

Also known as LEEP or diathermy loop biopsy, this procedure uses a small wire loop and an electrical current to cut away the affected area of tissue and seal the wound at the same time. The advantage of this treatment is that the cells are removed rather than destroyed, so the tissue can be sent for further tests to confirm the extent of the cell changes and make sure the area of your cervix that contains the cells has been removed.

Jo's Trust Case Study
Jill describes her experience with LLETZ and cervical cancer:

I had LLETZ treatment in Jan 2008. The results of this unfortunately discovered micro invasive cervical cancer, stage 1a1. I was devastated. I had just turned 35, had been married for 2 ½ years and was desperate to start a family. I was booked into have a further loop biopsy to confirm whether or not all the cancerous cells had been removed. I was warned that should any cancer still be found then treatment would be a Trachelectomy or Hysterectomy. Luckily, the results showed no further cancer. I was told to return in 6 months for a repeat smear & colposcopy.
