Mary's story

Experiences of cervical cancer and treatment

I was diagnosed with Cervical Cancer in February 2009. It was a shock but after all the tests, MRI scan etc, I was told I had a good chance of being cured. I needed Chemo/Radiotherapy treatment and I was scared!

I had 5 weeks of radiotherapy treatment with chemo once a week on Tuesdays. After that I had 3 brachytherapy treatments, internal radiotherapy. The travelling was the worst...one and half hours each way for my brachytherapy. I did stay at the hospital overnight so it wasn’t too bad, though I hate hospitals!

The treatment made me feel so tired and I still have that fatigue a little now though I am able to do much more than I could before Christmas. But I’m still here.

My main fear after being diagnosed was how I was going to tell my kids...especially my 18 year old son. He only had me. What if I died? Who would take care of him??

All these thoughts went through my mind in the beginning. I literally had myself dead and buried. But my CNS told me that was the normal process...now it was time to get well.

It is a long road to recovery and you feel like you will never be the same again but it takes time and you just have to follow what your body tells you. If you’re tired - rest.
I got the all clear in September 2009. I have regular checkups every 3 months.

I am a Cervical Cancer survivor!

One last thing: I found Jo's Trust website very helpful and supportive. The ladies there are fantastic. I don’t think I could have gotten through all this without them.
Thank you Jo's Trust!
