Cervical Screening Awareness Week - Jade Goody's legacy

Fri, 08/06/2012 - 01:00

As we approach Cervical Screening Awareness Week (CSAW) we hope to remind women about the importance of cervical screening. The most recent figures from across the UK show that since the surge in women getting screened as a result of Jade Goody's cervical cancer diagnosis in 2009, screening uptake is on the decline.

We hope that the broadcast of the Sky Living documentary Jade's Legacy: The Fight Goes On that aired on Thursday 7th June will go some way in showing the devastating effects that cervical cancer can have on a woman's life.

During CSAW we want to reach and remind women that cervical cancer is largely preventable and that cervical screening plays a vital part in this, saving around 5,000 lives in the UK every year.

Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust said: “We are saddended that screening uptake hasn’t been sustained since Jade’s death. I am concerned at this worrying downward trend as not taking up a screening invitation could literally mean the difference between life and death and we need to do everything we can to encourage more women to attend.”
