How long after treatment did menopause start? (external radiation/chemo/brachytherapy)

Hello -

I was diagnosed with State 1B2 cervical cancer in October 2018. I had 25 external radiation treatments, 6 chemo (cisplatin) and 4 brachytherapy treatments. My last brachytherapy was 2-1-19, so almost a year ago. Other than some weight gain, I don't believe I'm experiencing any symptoms of menopause yet. My gynecological and radiation oncologist said I would most like start menopause within 6-12 months of treatment ending. For those of you who have experienced menopause after treatment, how long was it before symptoms appeared? Thanks!

I started having hot flushes and PMS like mood swings within 2 weeks after my last brachy.

Mine started immediately after my last brachytherapy, they might have happened during treatment but I didn't notice till then. I get pretty bad hot flashes, mostly at night. My hair sheds pretty bad and I have really bad vaginal dryness and get up like a old lady. I just turned 34 so my doctors are going to test my hormones next month and go on from there, maybe be put on some HRT.

Hi. I'm nearly 4 years post treatment and apart from weight gain and a hot flush every so often, I don't think I've actually had symptoms.  You might be one of the lucky people who sail through it xxx

Hi,

It can be difficult to figure out whether some symptoms are caused by treatment or the menopause. However, I definitely started with some menopause symptoms 5 weeks after treatment. I'm getting hot flushes about 4 times a day and very irregular night sweats. Currently very manageable. The stiffness and (mildly) aching joints I have are likely to be a combination of both treatment and menopause. X

Diagnosed CC 01st August 2019 Stage 1b2 with 1 local lymph node involved. Something else showed up on pet scan. Treatment delayed for surgery, done on September 9th. Found to be a simple ovarian cyst, 1 ovary and tube removed. Treatment plan 5 chemo, 25 radio and 4 brachy. Treatment start date 02nd October 2019. Treatment end date 8th November.

Did anybody else get pretty bad dryness? I'm thinking I might need to start using a vaginal moisturizer. I asked my doctors about it a couple of months ago, they just said give it some more time, it might just be healing. But now it's been 5 months, so idk , and my doctors are men so they don't really seem to sympathize, so it can be frustrating.

Also have u guys got on HRT? Or been talked to about it? I guess were going to discuss that at my next months appointment, after a blood test. So a little nervous for that, I know there's so many different types and reasons to be cautious about them . So it kind of gives me a headache just thinking about it .

Not on HRT yet , they wanted to wait at least 6 months before starting that.

I do just like Memagh have stiff and achy joints, plus the night sweats and got flushes.

Not experiencing dry ness but a vaginal moisturiser might be a good idea Rissag, I've heard good things about Replens.

Yeah that was the brand I was looking up online, it had good reviews, might have to give it a try. Next month when I see my doctors I'll be at my 6 months, crazy how time flies. I have stiff joints too, I feel like a old lady sometimes. Sometimes I get brain fog pretty bad too, I'll go into a room and it'll take me a minute to remember what I went in there for.or a couple of times driving I missed my exit lol

Hi

My oncology team recommended Sylk following my vaginal bleed several months ago.  I'm getting on OK with it; has also helped alleviate the vulval tenderness/itchiness I was getting.   Thinking I might like to see how I get on with topical oestrogen cream.  I mainly want to combat the effects of the radiotherapy on my vagina (and ?vulva); I had a natural menopause (age 51y) before my cc appeared - I've never used HRT and I don't think it's relevant for me now.

Hi Rissag,

I have not been suffering with dryness (yet) but you are longer out of treatment than me so I could have it yet to come. Regarding HRT, I am hoping to avoid taking it and hope they can recommend alternatives. I have just turned 46 and my thinking is that I would probably start getting symptoms soon after this anyway. I would have to give it a lot more thought if I was younger because of worries about bone health/heart health etc. It's hard to figure it all out isn't it! X

Hi Maria, yeah it definitely is a lot to figure out. I just turned 34 a couple weeks ago, so figure there most likely gonna put me on HRT. My dryness started towards the end of my treatment, so I might just be one of the unlucky ones with that.

Really hoping it's a temporary rather than long term issue for you Rissag, you've been through so much already. I've heard of the Replens moisturiser several times and it's meant to last for days so at least you wouldn't have to apply every day.

Hi all

My menopause started within a few weeks after my brachy ended.
I am not on HRT - my doctor won't consider it because he says I am too young (32) which I do not really understand because it seems that it is the most common treatment. I am on the pill though - I really dislike the pill and it is ironic that I will never need birth control again, yet I need to take the pill. My doctor says he will keep me on the pill indefinitely.

The pill definitely does help with hot flashes. I notice if I forget to take it for a few days, I get hot flashes. I also have very achy joints (mainly knees and ankles) and think this is probably from treatment as well.

I can recommend a topical oestreogen cream, I have used it on and off in the past.

Love to all xx

Rissag

I have heard of people  being put on the pill , I think it's like a substitute for some HRT,since most BC pills have hormones but I don't think it's as strong as HRT . So I might have to see if that's what they're going to want to do since I'll probably have to be on something for a long time too. Why don't you like the pill? I've been on the pill in the past and never had a problem with it, but I'm sure it's different in this situation. Maybe because when you take it for birth control it's usually a combination pill, but I think for after cancer it's just usually one hormone, idk. If they only give me that I'm probably going to have to take a supplement for bone support, because I could already feel my joints getting weak and it's only been 6 months

I have achy joints in my knees as well but didn't realize that could be due to treatment/menopause.  Thanks for educating me!  :)

My menopause hit immediately after treatment and my main symptom was hot flashes. I never had a period after treatment and I'm a year and 3 months out. I was 42 when treatment ended so my doctor worried about bone density loss from premature menopause. That and radiation to your pelvis can put you at a much higher risk of breaking a bone. So my doc put me on HRT. She'll take me off when I turn 50. It helped a lot with hot flashes. I had a bone density scan and I have osteopenia, which is early stage bone density loss.
