Swollen Neck Lymph Node - Possible Recurrence

Hi,

I'm wondering if anybody has had a swollen neck lymph node investigated before and if so, what the results of the investigation were?

I recently had an MRI of my head and neck due to a swollen lymph node and the MRI has shown concerns and so tomorrow I will be having an ultrasound and needle biopsy of the node. I'm really worried that this will be found to be a recurrence of cervical cancer although I have seen that the neck lymph nodes are a less common site of recurrence, which is offering me a bit of hope.

If anybody has experienced a similar situation, I would appreciate any advice.

Thank you x

Hi Jenny,

Sorry I can't be much help as I have not had this problem. Hopefully one of the amazing ladies on here might be better able to help. I can only say that before my treatment started an MRI showed up something suspicious on my ovary. No one on the MDT team could figure out what it was and they also thought it might not be on the ovary but could be the bowel. I did end up having laparoscopic surgery and long story short it turned out to be a simple ovarian cyst which they removed and biopsied. I just wanted to say that not everything that lights up on an MRI turns out to be cancer, even an ear infection can cause lymph nodes in the neck to swell. Sending you lots of positive vibes and I hope you're not waiting too long for results.

X Maria

Diagnosed CC 01st August 2019 Stage 1b2 with 1 local lymph node involved. Something else showed up on pet scan. Treatment delayed for surgery, done on September 9th. Found to be a simple ovarian cyst, 1 ovary and tube removed. Treatment plan 5 chemo, 25 radio and 4 brachy. Treatment start date 02nd October 2019. Treatment end date 8th November.

10th February 2020

MRI and Pet-CT clear. NED

3 monthly scans

Thank you very much for getting back to me Maria. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing but I can't stop worrying!

I hope you're doing well after your treatment x

Hey sweetie,

I'm sorry I can't offer you any advice but I too wanted to wish you all the best and hope that it'll turn out to be fine, I know our lymph nodes are temperamental little buggers that don't like being poked or prodded and flare up with localised infections.
You could search forums to see if there are similar experiences, but hopefully someone with experience will reply soon.

massive hugs x

Thank you for your wishes Emmz. I had the ultrasound this afternoon and feel more reassured now. The doctor said that my lymph node did not appear unusual on the scan. I had a biopsy taken of the node so hopefully it comes back all clear. I'm feeling less anxious now as I thought my MRI must have found something scary for me to need an ultrasound as I was told I'd only need the ultrasound if the MRI showed suspicions but today's doctor said that they were doing the ultrasound as sometimes MRIs can be too detailed and so things highlighted by them may look like issues but actually aren't. Hopefully I'm not waiting long for the biopsy results.

I'd had a search of the forums for posts relating to cervical/neck lymph nodes but didn't find too many and the few that I found had both good and bad results but it does seem that it's rare for CC to recur in the cervical lymph nodes from what I've found.

I hope you're well x

Hi,

My CT showed concern over lymph nodes so I was sent for a PET scan which showed nothing concerning. The doctors said it can just be a bit of infection. I was terrier but it all turned out fine. Hopefully it will for you too. My lymph nodes in my neck swell up all the time completely randomly. Take care xx

hey jennyy,
That’s great!! I’m so pleased you’re feeling much more reassured, fingers crossed you don’t have too long to wait for the results and that the results are clear.
I find that cancer is just the gift that keeps on giving, just when you start to relax and feel positive bam! and the waiting omg I can’t stand it.
I’m good, getting used to my new post menopause normal but so grateful to be here.
Much love to you, hope you’re staying safe in this crazy world,
Love emma xxx

Thank you Lady. That makes me feel more reassured. I'm glad that your nodes came back fine. It's a shame that we can't just have the PET scan first to get the most accurate results quickly and save all the waiting and worrying. You're right Emma, the waiting is the worst!

Stay safe too. Have a great weekend x
