2 Positive HPV results

Good Afternoon,

I am new to this forum so please bear with me.

I had my first smear test last year and it came back HPV positive but no abnormal cells, I was asked to come back in a year which i did and have just recieved my results today and they are the same, still no abnormal cells but HPV positive and told to come back in a year again.

I am really worried about this, i already suffer from anxiety so this is just making things so much worse, i am constantly worrying about it and it is really disrupting my day to day life.

I guess i am worried that my body isnt fighting off the HPV and that it is going to develop into cc, i have been with my partner for 5 years now so i must have had it for that amount of time so its really worrying me.

I am looking for some reassurance, has anyone else had this or could anyone advise me on any information to put my mind at rest? I keep thinking should i be having more tests if i have a positive result twice in a row?

I also had an episode of mid cycle bleeding last week which lasted around 5 days, lighter than my normal period but i did need a pad.

If you have made it to the end of this post then thank you!

Any advice welcome

Amie :)

Hi Amie

Unfortunately for some of us, including myself, our bodies just can't seem to clear the HPV infection. It's great that you haven't had any abnormal smears, so just keep going to the smear tests because they will pick up any changes to prevent cc.

I know that it is scary and causes so much anxiety. I was HPV+ last year with abnormal cells that needed removing, and 6 months later I was still HPV+ with more abnormal cells. I am currently waiting for the results of my biopsy.

The best you can do is be good to yourself, mind and body! I've found more time for exercise and to relax as well as eating better, and I also bought a book called The Gynae Geek which helped me understand everything better! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to stress yourself out by thinking the worst. Take control of what you can and think positively, and if in doubt the forum is a great place to chat!

Good answer Bethany! I can also recommend the Gynae Geek book. I have given it to my 28 year old daughter and she has found it very useful too.  Fortunately she has not had the same problems as me with screening results but she does get painful periods (as I did when I was younger) and there is a lot of useful information in the book which help to explain what is normal/abnormal in women's health and when to seek medical help. Understanding facts goes a long way towards alleviating anxiety and I don't want my daughter to have to learn about it all the hard way like I did. I'm pretty sure she will recommend it to her friends too or be able to help them if they have worries. She told me 2 of her friends have had a lletz already.  Remember to be kind to yourselves ladies!
