Bleeding during smear

Hi, I'm 49 and up to date with smears . I went for my 3 yearly appointment last week and since then I've been worried out my mind . I have a inverted cervix and nurse couldn't get a proper visual so didn't complete the smear . She did see grey discharge and I had moderate bleeding during exam . Nurse is treating it as an infection and said that could cause bleeding & discharge . For a past week I've had very slight spotting and not sure why ? I'm on day 29 of my cycle so my period is due . My periods have been bit erratic the past few months so I'm not sure it's peri menopause symptoms.

I'm just so so worried the abnormal bleeding during smear and spotting is cervical cancer symptoms. Next step is retry of smear on Monday.
Look forward to hearing from someone xx

Hi

Slight spotting after a smear is normal although, speaking from experience long past, I might expect it to clear up within 2-3 days.  However, your nurse has suggested that your bleeding and discharge looks to be consistent with infection so try and take things a step at a time before jumping to any worst case conclusions.  I remember getting worried about what I thought was excessive bleeding when I had what was to be my last routine smear when I was 47y.  Unfortunately I concluded that the bleeding meant the smear was causing me harm (it doesn't) and it was one of a range of reasons why I stopped going for smear tests - big mistake (see my back story).

I'm not sure if it does, but maybe it would help if  the booklet that accompanies the screening invitation letter gave some information about what is normal in terms of post smear bleeding because I think it worries a lot of women.  The important thing is you are up to date with your smears and even if abnormal cells are found in your screening sample the most likely scenario is they will be pre-cancerous and can be removed with some relatively straightforward treatment. Even some very small, microscopic cervical cancers (cancer-in-situ) can be removed with similar straightforward treatment.

Thank you Jazza for your reply . I suffer from health anxiety and I've been really suffering past week . My head has raced ahead and ,even though my smears up to date , I think the bleeding during smear is sign of cancer .
I got my period yesterday ( 30 day cycle ..... last few months cycle been 42 , 21 , 25 and now 30 days ) so I'm not sure wither nurse will be able to look and attempt smear 🤔🤔

I've googled non stop and now so so anxious which is affecting everything.x

Hi Lynnietodd

Just to suggest, seriously, it really is best not to google for situations like this - it will mislead, confuse and scare you - better to maybe go for a walk etc.  It's the not knowing that is mentally so hard and I think I can empathise with how you must be feeling.  There are various conditions that can cause bleeding so try and keep an open mind until you know for sure what's going on.  You might want to speak to your GP about your bleeding - it'll be a second opinion and as it might speed things up if the doc considers you need urgent referral.

Thank you ,

I'm going to see nurse again on mon and take it from there . I guess I prob won't settle until she dies a smear and I get the results back . I know there could be many reasons why I was bleeding during smear but my anxiety makes me think the worst . Not sure if she will even be able to do smear on mon as could still have period 🤔🤔x
