Discharge that concerns me

Hi all, sorry if there is a similar topic like this. I had my first smear test recently, I am 29. I am on birth control For few years. I have brown discharge for a while now and was really afraid to have smear test... anyway I got it done, I told the nurse that I get brown discharge but she reassured me that it could be because of the pill that I am using. When she did the smear test she said she didn’t notice any funny discharge( I wasn’t having brown discharge during the test) But the next day I got and it’s like watery light brown. It will be a while until I get my smear results but I am getting very anxious. I know I had this discharge before but I always kept ignoring it. Should I contact the doctor or should I just wait until my results. I have always been anxious about my health so this wait is driving me mad. I think this is the only symptom I have but I am afraid there is something really wrong! :(

Hi

Your discharge is worrying you and you don't really know what's causing it.  So I definitely think it would be a advisable to see your GP about it.  The smear is a screening test designed solely to check for abnormal cervical cells.  There are a number of reasons which could explain your discharge and your GP will be able to take these into account and offer appropriate advice and possibly further tests.

Incidentally, give yourself a massive pat on the back for overcoming your fear and getting a smear test.  I can totally empathsise; it really does feel like a big deal to some of us.

Hi

Sorry, I've just given you mostly out of date information about the smear test.  Depending on where you live, most smear tests (aka cervical screening test)  now check for the presence of human papilloma virus (HPV).  If HPV is present then the sample is checked for abnormal cervical cells.

This doesn't change what I suggested about seeing your GP.
