High grade HPV and low grade abnormal cells

Hi,

I recently had my first smear and had my results letter to say I have high grade HPV and low grade abnormal cells. I have recently been getting lower back pain and the slightest red tinge discharge (happened around 3 times).

I have been referred for a colposcopy in a months time but I am beside myself with worry. I have recently had a baby and all I keep thinking is the worst case scenario. I am just hoping to understand what the chances are of it being cancer or whether my results would have been categorised as high grade if so?

I don’t know how I’m going to get through the next month as it’s all I can think about.

Thanks for reading xx

Hiya I had the same diagnosis just over a year ago and totally understand. Life just seemed to stop. I had the colposcopy which came back exactly as the smear so no treatment. I was so scared on the day of the colposcopy but the excellent nurses put me totally at ease.  If the smear shows as low grade then incredibly unlikely to be cancer. As the nurse said if it was just those low changed without hpv you would not even have been referred under the old system before Co testing. Try to just get thru each day easy to say. Hope you feel better soon.

I recently had the same result. I had a smear last year which was HPV positive with no changes. It was only due to the new dual testing that I had to have a repeat this year. I’m disappointed with the result but I suppose it’s better to get it looked at.

I too recently had a baby (April) and I had my first baby in December 2017 so wonder if my body has been struggling to fight the virus.

First smear @ 25 - normal

Second smear 04/2018 - positive HPV no changes

Third smear  07/2019 - HPV positive and low grade changes

09/2019 Colposcopy, 1 biopsy possible CIN1
