Second smear test still “minor changes”

Hello I am looking for some advice, I had my very first smear test may 2018 and it came back “abnormal” repeat again in 6 months.

I had my second smear November 2018 and received results today saying minor changes repeat smear in 6 months time.

I am very worried because nothing seems to be improving, and concerned being told to wait another 6 months, should I not be getting further investigation seeing as both tests have been abnormal? I am also having irregular periods they have pretty much stopped I explained to my gp but he hasn’t done anything about it. I am wondering is their a link between my abnormal smears and no periods? I am 28 and will be wanting children in near future.

Any help advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards

what does minor changes even mean? Why is the information provided so vague, do they not understand how worrying this is and expect wait 6 months for another test. If my smear is abnormally for second time in a row then why not further investigated instead of waiting 6 months what if it gets worse? It’s very frustrating.

I am going through the exact same thing

I am 26 had two abnormal smears and irregular periods. I am now getting a colposcopy at the end of this month

Not sure if irregular periods are linked my doctor doesnt seem to think so and is not concerned

Hope all goes well for you

25 January 2018: Cervical screen: LSIL hpv positive not 16/18

Repeat test in one year

11 December 2018: repeat cervical screen: LSIL hpv positive (not 16 or 18)

14 December: referral to gynaecologist for colposcopy

Try not to worry too much. There is a chance yet that it will revert back and your smear won't have indicated any high risk HPV. You usually get invited for further investigation for borderline or low-grade changes if you have a high risk strain of HPV detected. Waiting another 6 months is reasonable, I had my first Colposcopy in my early twenties following a borderline result with high risk HPV and they were happy for me to come back in a year following that.

Is your GP looking into your period being irregular? It could be Policystic ovaries. I've never heard of anyone's periods stopping due to abnormal cells. X

I wouldn't worry about it too much...Cells tend to go out of normal all the time and depending on the severity that they play the watch and wait game...A friend of mine had the same thing..>She had to go back 3 times every 6 months for mild abnormal pap test and she's a lot older then you but eventually those cells did go back to normal after about 2 or 3 mild abnormal ones..It takes many many years for abnormal cells like 10/15 years and depending on how high your abnormal cells are, the doctors know its safe to wait since yours are mild...They look at your age, and how severe it is.  they are asking for a repeat to see if they go back to normal on their own...Don't worry, all this waiting is not going to turn them into cancer...I know its hard but try to relax...The doctors would know its safe to wait...If they feel anything suspicious or worried about, trust me you would be right in there for further testing...They wouldn't take that chance of you waiting 6 months...I have abnormal cells but high and because of my age I am being sent for a biopsy and colposcopy and I got the appointment set for 3 weeks (see how fast).
