test fears

Hi I am having an overdue smear test next week and I just wondered if anyone had any advice.

I have struggled with these tests for years, always found them very painful and I get so nervous and know it just makes it worse,I have gone through stages off putting them off as I get so worried about the pain but having had a previous bad result which resulted in a colposcepy which was awful I dont want to not have it.

Anything that has helped someone else might just help me this time.

Thank you x

I've always been nervous , every single time I convince myself something is wrong - even though I've actually had normal smears up until last year . It's not nice , for me it's the waiting but the actual process isn't either .

I have always found them a bit painful / uncomfortable - each time they would try with one speculum then another - I never thought anything of it , I thought maybe I was too tense . The smear test before last the nurse told me I had a tilted cervix and adjusted the bed and just got on with it and it wasn't painful . The most recent , I told her as soon as I went in and again no messing around and it didn't hurt . I was dreading the colposcopy because of it but I mentioned it to the doctor and she said " oh don't worry about that - this chair is amazing ! " - and the colposcopy was more comfortable than most of my smears !

23/03/20 - smear result - hpv positive . All previous smears clear.

09/02/21 - smear result - hpv positive + high grade ( moderate ) dyskaryosis. Referred for colposcopy.

16/02/21- colposcopy and biopsy . Awaiting results 3-4 weeks .

04/03/21 - biopsy results in , CIN2 confirmed . Treatment booked for 23/03/21

Hi Mollycat

If you are perimenopausal or menopausal topical oestrogen cream can help make the smear test more comfortable.  You would need to check in with your GP or maybe GP practice nurse prior to your smear appointment as the cream needs to be prescribed.

Ok thank you, I am around that age (50) but as yet I wouldnt have thought I was,did read something about a muscle relaxant which I was going to look into as well, its really the actual pain of the test that is my problem as had some really bad experiences over the years which has made like this.

I've come across women who get a one off prescription for a tranquilizer - maybe Diazepam.

smearfear2021

I[ve just been for my smear but i left without it happening. Feel even worse. Got myself into a total state in the nurse's office and she has booke dme back in with vlaium (2*2mg to take 1.5 hours in advance) for next time. I have had awful smears and labours ending in EMCS due to tilted cervis. I was dreading it again today but never dreamed I would leave without it bein done. I've always gone back and had them no matter how much I am shaking and crying while they do it. This time I just wouldn't let her near me. Kept jumpting back. Pushing her hand away. Don't really know what came over me. I know I had worled myself up alot in advance. I don't think I can ever face her again. So embarasssed. I had my last one at the hospital but they won't do them any more (at the hospital it was okay i was shaking and crying but i let it happen) but I've had to go back to GP/nurse this time and i lost it. I cna't stanf being told to just breathe. Can I go anywhere else. Happy to pay. I am in south wales.

Ive just been for my smear test. I hate them but I always go through with it. Got myself into a total state and ended up rebooking for next week with a prescroption for 4mg of diazepam. Mortified now and can't see how it will be any better all I have now is all the fear and the added embrassement of the nurse thinking I am a nutcase.
