What to expect

Hi, you may have seen me post in December about my worry that I may have cervical cancer, I'm showing all the symptoms but smear and bloods are normal.

I understand that it's probably highly unlikely that I do have cervical cancer, but I've had a couple of people write to me who have had normal smears and blood and have actually had cancer so obviously this still worries me.

I finally got my appointment for gynae, it was an urgent referral and I was told it would take up to 6 months due to covid but thankfully only too 9 weeks.. 9 weeks of me trolling the Internet looking for possible answers to my symptoms.

For anyone who doesn't know they are :                          *irregular spotting between periods along with discharge, discharge seems pretty normal though, nothing that I would say was alarming but it's always there, I get no break from it.

*my periods went from being very irregular to coming every 2 weeks and lasting up to 14 days being my longest, and very heavy my heaviest was leaking 3 heavy flow tampons per hour

*I cramp in my lower pelvic area, lower back area and these cramps travel up my left side

*I have experienced pain with having sex and I always bleed after

So anyway I've finally got my appointment through next week and I don't know what to expect, what are they going to do, obviously I'm not aloud to bring anyone with me because of covid so I've to do this alone.. Slightly nervous right now, especially because I don't know what happens in these appointments, I'd feel better if I had some sort of idea.

Thanks x

Hi

it's a positive sign that your smear and blood results are normal ! From my understanding smears detect changes in cells that occur years before they turn into cancer and the fact you have not had those changes is a good sign ! I'm no doctor and I know when you are worried and you Google , you convince yourself that you will be that one rare case - I can't talk , I'm exactly the same ! I have just had a colposcopy for moderate cell changes and I even asked the doctor if she thought it was cancer ( to which she replied that she did not ) - but I'm still paranoid ! The reason I'm saying this is just to show that you are not alone , we all think the worst at first but the fact is cervical cancer is rare and your synptoms are highly likely to be something else ! I try to look at the probability and the factors in my favour to try and calm myself - normal smears and normal bloods are factors in your favour .

As for the appointment I only had a colposcopy and biopsy - no treatment - so I don't know what your appointment entails but if it does include a colposcopy/ biopsy it's honestly ok ! I actually found it less uncomfortable than a smear . I was on th verge of tears the whole time , I was so nervous , but the doctor and the nurses were so lovely and explained everything to me - it was all over in 10 minutes .

I hope everything goes ok let us know how you get on xx

Hi thanks for the reply, I know deep down I don't have cancer as the smear was normal and the bloods were normal, but I always have that tiny bit out doubt in my mind about everything, it's just the way I am, I'm a worst scenario kind of person I just can't help it. I think to myself, if I was giving someone else advice I'd tell them not to worry as the smear and bloods were grand, I'm just not good at taking my own advice. Xx

I am exactly the same ! It's horrible as it's really hard for me to ever just feel ok , I'm always worried about something . I guess some of us are just wired that way !

like you say your smear and your bloods are fine - it's been ruled out already really xx

I have been experiencing the same symptoms and when I had my gynae appointment they spoke about what could be causing these symptoms then went to have a feel of my stomach, tried to do a biopsy but said would need other instruments due to my cervix having scarring then spoke about sending me for an ultrasound scan then would see me to speak about results and possible ablation or hysterectomy. Hope this helps, might be different treatments with different consultants though.
