CIN 3 what’s next!?

Hi, I've lurked since I got my referral letter for colposcopy at the start of February.

I had my colposcopy on 12th February where she saw a small area of change and took a punch biopsy. At the appointment she wasn't very informative. Admittedly, I could have asked loads of questions but I was still a little shocked and anxious so my brain wasn't really with it.

She advised results would be 6-8 weeks and said she won't put them through as urgent. Yesterday I received my results letter which was very vague ' A biopsy of the cervix was taken and the result was CIN (abnormal cells, Not Cancer)' and i'd receive an appointment soon for colposcopy clinic.

I contacted my GP to ask what grade and whether HPV was detected and all she could advise was it was Grade 3 and she doesn't know about HPV.

Does anybody know the next steps? Treatments etc?

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello if it is CIN3 then they probably want to treat the cells at your next colposcopy appointment. If I were you I would telephone them to ask if that is what they are planning to do so that you can be as prepared and informed as possible. Let us know how you get on. I found knowing what was going to happen in advance useful and helped me to cope better with the treatment and recovery.

There are also useful pages on this website and Jo's helplinr may be able to help you more

Take care

Thank you so much for your reply. I have struggled a little to get to grips with how to post on this forum and only just realised you'd responded.

I received my appointment letter for Gynaecology which is 28th May. I tried to call the numbers I have been given on recent letters to ask advice but I'm  still yet get an answer on those lines.

I understand services are limited but I still can't help feel a little frustrated with the lack of information.

Hi karleey

Sorry that you have had a frustrating time with trying to get the info you need. I would 100% agree with 55 that you will almost certainly be offered the LLETZ treatment when you attend colposcopy after the biopsy confirms CIN. Especially if it is CIN3 as this does not usually regress of it's own accord (sometimes CIN1 OR CIN2 will be followed up with "watchful waiting"). The LLETZ treatment sounds scary but I am the biggest scaredy cat and actually coped with it ok. Not anyone's idea of a fun afternoon but totally tolerable and in your best interests to get the cells removed. There is loads of good info on the LLETZ treatment on the Jo's trust info pages, and quite a few detailed personal accounts from forum users.

All the best x

Hi Karleey

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear that you haven't managed to get through to the hospital. Perhaps you could try again on Tuesday? I found out back in September that the best time to speak to my clinical nurse specialist was early in the morning about 8 am as she was in her office then - this was the time she advised me to ring. Since the pandemic lots of staff have been moved to work in other departments but I think now things are starting to go back to normal. I spoke to my CNS last week about the appointment I have coming up in June. Try again before your appointment as it will probably help to set your mind more ar ease about what to expect.

I hope it goes well for you - let us know how you get on

I just got colposcopy results back that show CIN 3 as well. It was a shock d/t the fact that they said it was just a small spot that didn't look too significant. Supposed to hear back in a few days on when I will have my LEEP. Hope you got some answers!
