High risk HPV, low grade changes, immunosuppressive meds.

Hi all,

I am 31 and my first two smears were clear.

My most recent smear has come back and shows high risk HPV and low grade changes. (I haven't had a letter as there was a delay in sending it out, but that is the phrase the nurse used on the phone).

I have been invited for colposcopy and I am really scared. Obviously nobody will be able to go with me. Does it hurt?
I am also worried as I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and take methotrexate which lowers my immune system. Does anyone have any experience of taking these drugs and your body managing to get ride of HPV?

My mum had CIN3 and a cone biopsy when she was younger. I am very scared that mine will progress faster because of my weaker immune system?

I know this is a very specific situation but I'd be hugely grateful for any similar experiences. Thanks ever so much for reading.

Hi love, I'm afraid I don't know anything about how the meds you're taking might affect your immune response, but just to say that I've just come back from a colposcopy with 3 biopsies for HPV+ moderate changes, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I feared. I actually thought it was less uncomfortable than a smear test. She asked me to cough when she took the biopsies and that worked really well to cover any pain. I now feel some minor period-like cramps, but nothing else. I had worried myself literally sick over this test and I feel so relieved. My advice would be to write down a list of questions that you want to ask before you go, for example about the effect of your meds, because you're likely to be nervous when you go in and it's easy to forget! Also ask for a number you can call if you have doubts about your biopsy results or further questions. My NHS nurses were very happy to give me one, although I imagine all hospitals are a bit different. Good luck! xxx

Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Think you're right about writing things down - I will definitely forget something if not.

I go tomorrow for my colposcopy and Im on leflunomide (I failed methotrexate) for psoriatic arthritis. If I remember I will let u know what they say to me x

Hiya, so I went for colposcopy this morning. Mine is a little different as I've had 6 abnormal smears and 3 lletz treatments. Basically she said that the immunosuppressive drugs would hinder our bodies response to clearing the hpv virus. They will look after you in there x

Thanks so much for this info. Really appreciate it and it's so nice to find a place to connect with people who are in a similar situation.
I thought they might say something like that!

You are welcome. I'm sorry I couldn't give you more info, I am waiting on some results and a meeting about treatment options myself. I could always update you with what they say if it helps. Although everyone is different, our meds do the same thing. Good luck with your appointment x
