Hi Carron,

well done for plucking up the courage - you wont regret it! I am 41 and was diagnosed with cc on thursday so my head is all over the place right now. I am in clinic on tuesday to find out the staging and have everything crossed that this has been caught early - cant even contemplate the alternative. I'm sure you will have been through all the emotions that go with wondering where your at! I've made some connections with some really fabulous ladies through this site and have only been on for a few weeks myself so I have no doubt you'll get the re-assurance and advice you need. If you are able to, I would really love to hear your story as it really helps to put things in context!

sending you warm wishes

Andrea

Hi Andrea

You have my sympathy and know how you feel. I have to say it took a while to get over the shock of it,dont think i slept properly for a week my mind was all over the place.

I got a letter for my routine smear but nearly didnt go for it as i had a smear done 19 mths early at the hospital, but decided i should really go (this was about 2-3 mths after received 2 reminders) i received a letter 6 day after going and it said i had mild cervic changes and should go again in 6mth, i went back after 6mths and waited nervously (as u do) and received a letter for a hospital appointment (but the letter arrived 2 day after the appointment date) so i rang the hospital to say what had happened a was given a new appintment (which was an other 3 weeks away), i went to my drs and explained what had happened and his admin ladie was able to get me a earlier appointment much to my relieve, when we got there a ladie called us into to a room and took some detail from me and then said that i was to go next door and put a gown on as i was having a coloscopspy done, but to my surprise they said they were doing a loop biopsy. i was told it would take 4 weeks for my result to come thr but i was at work and got a nhs reminder text of a appoitment that had been made (but it was for a different hospital and i had not had a letter either) so im saying to my colleague that it not right, when i got home i rang the hospital were they confirmed that the appointment was for me i told them i hadnt had a letter she said it had been sent but never received it so rang and asked them to send me 1. we turned up for the appointment really confused and having no idea why i was there as there was nothing in the letter. we was called into the dr room and he started talking about my loop biopsy and were the pre cancel cells were and he started drawing a diagram and explaing that at the top of my cervic was cancer, well i remember just starring at the diagram and thinking what did he just say cancer i looked at my husband and said did he really say that he loked as shocked as me. The dr talked about further treatment and a hysteroctomy. I go in on the 24th oct.

I wish yo all the best keep in touch.

would love to hear your story to.

xx :)

Hi Carron,

my story is similar but the admin has been so more straightforward! I have had 3 yearly smears but my test in March picked up mild/boderline changes so I was invited back after 6 months to be re-tested. I went on 6/9 and was more nervous about the procedure as find it quite uncomfortable but whilst lying on th couch with legs wide open, the nurse seemed to have concerns about a polyp so got the dr in to have a look - she agreed and asked me to stay to speak to her after her surgery was finished. She said the polyp was bleeding etc and felt it needed further examination as well as removal and I was fast-tracked for an appt the following. The consultant saw me and said I needed to come into have colposcopy, removal of polyp and also they would look at my womb whilst in. He told me under local but this was booked under general in the end (phew). That was done on 24/9 and still have some light bleeding/discharge. A follow up appt came for 4 weeks (23/10) whis seems to be standard but I returned from work on monday to find a letter asking me to come in on the thurs (11/10). I just knew it wasnt good and posted on here for some support. Thursday 11/10 was the worst day of my life as the doc told me they had found cancer but could not tell me the stage until the MRI had been done. Luckily for me the MRI had broken down and they were awtg engineer - he fixed it whilst I was still there and as they had already cancelled non urgent scans they asked me if I could return at teatime for the scan - didnt have to think about that one! I get those results on Tuesday and i have this really heavy feeling of dread in my stomach constantly but am keeping upbeat and strong as it could be really good news. I am of course still terified that this has spread but how could that be? The doc mentioned my grade of cancer being 1 but said she couldnt confirm stage and that they were different but all I have read does not refer to grade so am confused!!! Has anyone mentioned that to you?

Kay from Oz on here has been a tremendous support and she is going for a hysterectomy on Friday so you will be going through the op at a similar time so I'm sure she will respond when she is next online. I'm resigned to the fact that they wil also suggest this to me so its good to have that support network

I am linking every little ache and pain to the cancer now (lower back pain, occasional heavy legs, fatigue). Have you had any symtoms?

Thanks again for your story - although not good for you, its re-assuring that others are going through the same and share the same fears and emotions. I think I will probablly have a good cry tomorrow when kids are in school and hubby in work now this has had time to sink in. I am certainly not going into work just yet but will take each day at a time.

Sorry I cant help with the hysterectomy advice but I hope "talking" has helped in some way (it has for me). As Rosehip said, we can help each other through this teriible time.

Lots of warm wishes coming your way from East Yorkshire

Hi Andrea

I went to the hospital in oct 2010 by referral of my dr as i was having extreme ladie problems, the consultant did a smear, swob etc and said i had problems from both overies and womb, she sent me for a scan and was told to go back in 8 weeks, when i returned we sat in the waiting room for over 2 hr and i kept seeing a ladie going up and down and in out of a room and all i could think was she must of had bad new. To my surprise she eventely popped her head round and called my name (by this time we had been sat in a total empty waiting room for over 2 hrs, no one came and said a thing this me). it turned out they had only that day notice that i had a very large overian cyst which urgently need removing and she said then that all my other result had been ok. but when i had my smear in jan the nurse said is this your follow up appointment to which i said no it my routine smear test she said oww i thought you had come back because you had a bad smear last year!!!!! but the consultan had said all my otehr test where ok!!!
Yes he did talk about stages but i was in shock so didnt really hear all he said my husband said a stage 1.
Yes i have had sympton but didnt connect it all until the dr asked me question.... these included mid cycle bleeding, bleeding after ***,back ache, *** hurting, weeing alot, bloated stomach of and on.
I have my pre op tommorrow at 9:30 and the nurse said it a long day...joy :(
Ive read/heard they do lung and heart test but unsure how true this is!!!
To be honest being at work has help to give me a break from thinking about it all day...dont get me wrong i do think about it even at work but most of the time im very busy and a good distraction.. my dr wanted to give me a sick note until i have the op but refused it.
Im lucky as work have been so supportive.
I will be thinking about you on tuesday. big hugs
plesae let me know how you get on.

Just wanted to say welcome to Jo's it is a great site and has been a real support to me over the last few months. Will be thinking of you I know I found the waiting for results from biopsies and scans the worst part. I found it easier once I knew what I was up against and what the treatment plan was I just thought right I have got to get on with this and do it! Good luck and keep us posted Lisa x

Hi Carron

:( How scary this must all be for you. I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and also all the bumbling and fumbling that seems to be going on. It certainly wouldn't help you to feel confident in the abilities of the people treating you! Remember, if you aren't comfortable with your doctor, you have every right to ask for a second opinion.

Being told you have cancer is really bad news, but having it found while it is still stage one is really good news. Stage one means it hasn't spread anywhere else and in a lot of cases, surgery is the only treatment needed. In some cases with cervical cancer, it can even all be removed with a LLETZ procedure and a complete cure is that simple. If you're doc is talking about a hysterectomy and you're not comfortable with that, get a 2nd opinion. There could be other options. Not all doctors take the same approach to treating CC. Some are more conservative and some are more aggressive.

I'm having a hysterectomy on the 19th for unresolved CIN3 and a fibroid, so I know how daunting the thought of surgery is. I can relate to your feeling of helplessness. It's like control over your life has been taken away from you, and it can be very frightening and overwhelming. A site that I have found to be a fantastic resource and support is Hystersisters. It's a US based site, but women from all over the world go on there. Jo's is wonderful, but there is a whole lot more info about hysterectomies on the Hystersisters site.

Get as much information as you can about the procedure they're planning and ask if there are any alternatives, and like I've already said, if you're not happy with the answers, try for a second opinion. Hang in there. You can and will get through this!
