It’s our birthday! 20 years of Jo’s in 20 facts
Last modified: 24 May 2025, 14:14
Jo’s turns 21 this weekend! This year may not have turned out how we thought it would at the start of our anniversay year. It’s been a tough few months and we’re sad we can’t raise a glass together, however we’re still celebrating and looking back on what we have achieved together in our 20 years.
Thanks to your amazing support and fundraising, we hope we’ll be here for many more years in the future, supporting everyone affected by cervical cancer and continuing to make the world a better place for our community. Here’s to the next 20 years!
Here are 20 things you may not have known about Jo’s…
Who are we?
1
This is the 20th year of our charity, but did you know that our name has only been Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust since 2010? Before that, we were simply ‘Jo’s Trust’
2
We were set up by just one man, James Maxwell, who founded Jo’s in memory of his wife Jo Maxwell. She passed away after having cervical cancer in 1999
3
There are 23 of us working behind the scenes at Jo’s – our office is in London but we have 3 staff in Scotland and several who work from home around the country
We give support
4
Our Helpline began in 2011, 9 years ago. Since then we have taken around 10,500 calls
5
Since 2011, we have trained almost 100 people to volunteer on our Helpline
6
Our annual support and information day, Let’s Meet, first took place in 2004 – that means there have been 16 Let’s Meets

10
Our Ask the Expert service is made up of a panel of 59 experts who give up their time to help answer questions
11
We have taken 14,000 enquiries using this service!
We fundraise
12
Our sponsored walk/run Steps for Jo’s started in 2008! This is the first year it’s gone virtual
13
We’ve been part of Women V Cancer for 9 years (since 2011), where every year hundreds of incredible women take on overseas treks and cycles to raise funds for 3 women’s cancer charities!
14
Over 1000 amazing Facebook fundraisers have raised over £107,000 for us
We help to educate and raise awareness
15
Over 1.5 million people have downloaded or ordered our health information resources
16
Our #SmearForSmear campaign has been running for 6 years, reaching millions of people every year during Cervical Cancer Prevention Week in January
17
We’ve reached over 22,000 people through our public health outreach work, spreading the word about cervical health
18
We’ve been supported by 202 Trusts and Foundations
19
We’ve worked with 500 GP surgeries in London, Manchester and Glasgow to help them reduce barriers to cervical screening
20
We have delivered training to over 3000 healthcare professionals
We’ve achieved a lot together in 20 years but we won’t stop until cervical cancer is a thing of the past. Donating to Jo’s today could help us get to that day faster.
